UNGA80 HLW side event “Restoring Childhood and Humanity – Advancing Peace in Ukraine Through the Return of Ukrainian Children”
Statement by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia H.E. Mr Margus Tsahkna
23 September 2025, New York
Excellencies,
Let me begin by thanking President Zelenskyy and Prime Minister Carney for convening this important event and for their leadership of the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children.
The safe return of every Ukrainian child is not only a humanitarian question. It is a fundamental step toward achieving a just and lasting peace.
The return of every deported child to Ukraine is our highest priority, and Estonia is committed to contribute. We stand ready to serve as a transit country and to facilitate the safe passage of children returning to Ukraine.
Estonia is also ready to provide technical and cyber-security support for processing, storing and protecting sensitive data on deported children. This is vital both for bringing children home and preserving evidence needed for accountability.
On top of that, it is crucial prepare for the day after. Children need rehabilitation to heal from trauma and reintegration to rebuild their lives. Estonia has contributed through concrete actions, including supporting reconstruction in the Zhytomyr region.
Finally, we must step up pressure on Russia and those responsible for these crimes. Sanctions must be tightened, targeting individuals and institutions behind these violations, and coordinated closely among like-minded partners and beyond.
Colleagues,
The human dimension of this war must remain at the forefront. By returning every Ukrainian child, we restore not only childhoods, but also humanity.
Thank you.
