Two Estonian soldiers heavily wounded in Afghanistan

TALLINN, Jun 11, BNS – Two Estonian soldiers were heavily wounded today as a foot patrol of ESTCOY-6 was attacked in Helmand province in the south of Afghanistan, but their injuries are not life-threatening.

The soldiers were wounded in explosions when insurgents attacked troops patroling on foot in the Helmand town of Nov Zad Wednesday afternoon, spokespeople for the General Staff here said.

The injured soldiers were taken to the Camp Bastion base and placed in the care of medics. Both underwent surgery and their lives are not in danger.

The Estonian Peace Operations Center has informed the soldiers’ next of kin of the incident.

ESTCOY-6 continues operations in its area of responsibility.

The defense forces will not release the names of the casualties and information about the nature of their injuries because this is prohibited under the law on protection of personal data.

The 105-member infantry company started service in Helmand last month.

Estonian defense forces have been participating in the NATO-led international force ISAF since 2003 and lost three personnel during that time.
