Explanation of Vote: „Admission of new Members to the United Nations“

10th Emergency Special Session “Illegal Israeli actions in occupied East Jerusalem and the rest of the Occupied Palestinian Territory”
Explanation of Vote: „Admission of new Members to the United Nations“ delivered by H.E. Rein Tammsaar, Permanent Representative of Estonia
10 May 2024

Estonia voted in favour of the resolution (A/ES-10/L.30.Rev1, entitled „Admission of new Members to the United Nations“) in order to reaffirm our unwavering support to a just and comprehensive resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, based on the two state solution, with the State of Israel and an independent, democratic, contiguous, sovereign, and viable State of Palestine, living side by side in peace and security. We support revitalising a political horizon and reinvigorating international efforts towards this goal.

Estonia supports granting the State of Palestine additional rights and privileges for participation in the work of the General Assembly, without setting a precedent and in full conformity with the UN charter, i.e. excluding the right to vote and putting forward candidatures to United Nations organs, and maintaining the status of a non-member observer state. Estonia’s vote in favour does not constitute bilateral recognition of the State of Palestine.
