Comment by Ambassador Sven Jürgenson at UN Security Council private meeting on Myanmar

We witness the continued violence and horrific attacks against the civilians by the security forces. Almost 900 people have been killed in crackdowns by the security forces. This is the fifth Security Council Meeting since the coup happened, but the military remains unmoved despite of our calls. Estonia condemns all unlawful actions by the military and continue to urge the release of all arbitrary detainees immediately, stop violence and ensure full respect of human rights and fundamental freedoms, including the restoration of communication channels.

We welcome the ASEAN visit to Myanmar in June. However, the implementation process has remained slow on the 5-Point Consensus. We encourage ASEAN to make additional efforts to further accelerate the process.

The humanitarian crisis is worsening and threatening regional stability. It is essential that the humanitarian actors reach all those in need across Myanmar. We continue to support the Secretary General’s Special Envoy Ms Christine Schraner Burgener and her efforts to engage with the ASEAN countries.
