Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on violence against women, its causes and consequences – UNGA76 3rd Committee

Mr Chair,

I have the honour to deliver this statement on behalf of the Nordic and Baltic countries: Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Sweden and my own country, Estonia.

We welcome the Special Rapporteur in the 3rd Committee and thank her for her presentation.

The Nordic and Baltic countries strongly condemn sexual and gender based violence in all its forms. We welcome the commitments on SGBV launched at the Generation Equality Forum and are proud to be members of the Group of Friends for the elimination of violence against women and girls.

The data from 2020 shows that the COVID-19 pandemic has added to the existing epidemic of violence against women and girls. It has added to the risks faced by them in the home and by their intimate partners while disrupting the response to violence and services to survivors. Conflict-related sexual violence against women and girls continues as an abhorrent pattern across conflicts around the world, with little to no accountability.

  • We value the work done on the femicide watch prevention initiative. What do you see as next steps to move towards better legislative and policy responses and greater awareness on the issue?
  • On the EDVAW Platform – what do you see as the main potential of the platform as well the next steps for greater synergy among the UN mechanisms on violence against women and girls?
