Estonia, together with Belgium, France, Germany and the United Kingdom, plans to raise the issue of Belarus at the UN Security Council tomorrow, 11 November.
„Estonia has promised to keep what is happening in Belarus under international attention and keep the UN Security Council focused on the situation if necessary,“ Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu stressed.
According to Reinsalu, the authorities of Belarus unfortunately continue to use violence and speak to the people in the language of repressions. The authorities have been involved in torture, mistreatment and enforced disappearances, while attacks on the freedom of the press and the intimidation of women activists with the threat of removal of their children continue.
„The international community has not forgotten about the situation in Belarus and must continue to call on the authorities of Belarus to hold a dialogue with citizens with the aim of holding free and fair elections,“ Reinsalu said.
One of the tasks of the Security Council is to help prevent conflicts and stop them from escalating. One of the main objectives of Estonia as an elected member of the Security Council is to ensure compliance with international law, and keep grave violations of human rights in international focus.
