The Security Council held a VTC private meeting on the situation in Myanmar on 30 April 2021, and was briefed by Minister of Foreign Affairs II Dato Erywan Pehin Yusof of Brunei Darussalam, in his capacity as the current Chair of ASEAN, about the outcomes regarding the situation in Myanmar at the recent ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting. The Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Myanmar also briefed the Council on her ongoing visit to the region and the latest situation on the ground.
The Members of the Security Council reiterated their strong support for ASEAN’s positive and constructive role in facilitating a peaceful solution in support of the people of Myanmar and commended ASEAN’s continued efforts to engage with all relevant parties in Myanmar. The Members of the Security Council welcomed the convening of the ASEAN Leaders’ Meeting on 24 April 2021 in Indonesia, and welcomed the Chairman’s Statement and the “Five-Point Consensus” reached. They encouraged continued ASEAN leadership in this endeavour. They underlined the importance of ASEAN’s call for an immediate cessation of violence and called for implementation of the Five Point Consensus without delay as a first step towards a peaceful and sustainable solution through constructive dialogue. They also wished for an early visit by the ASEAN Special Envoy to Myanmar.
The Members of the Security Council underlined their full support for the work of the Special Envoy and welcomed her ongoing visit to the region. They encouraged complementarity of her work to the work of ASEAN, They hoped she would visit Myanmar as soon as possible.
The Members of the Security Council reiterated their deep concern at the situation in Myanmar following the declaration of the state of emergency imposed by the military on 1 February, and reiterated their support for Myanmar’s democratic transition. They called once again for the release of all those arbitrarily detained, including State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi and President Win Myint. They repeated all of the calls in their March 10 PRST and the February 4 Press Statement.
The Members of the Security Council reaffirmed their strong commitment to the sovereignty, political independence, territorial integrity and unity of Myanmar. They stressed that they continued to monitor the situation closely and would remain actively seized of the matter.
