TALLINN, Jun 20, BNS – USS Mahan, a fully equipped quided missiles destroyer ship will arrive at Tallinn on Friday; on the same day the USNS LCPL Roy M. Wheat will leave Tallinn.
Mahan is a one of 59 Arleigh-Burke class destroyers in the US Navy.
The destroyer is equipped with two 20-millimeter cannon and a vertical launching system missile arsenal. The ship carries an SH-60 Sea Hawk helicopter intended for anti-submarine warfare.
USS Mahan is the fifth US Navy ship named after Rear Adm. Alfred Thayer Mahan (1840-1914), a well-known naval historian and theoretician.
The ship was launched on June 29, 1996 and was handed over to the US Navy on February 14, 1998. The destroyer belongs to the 6th US Fleet, and its home base is Norfolk, Virginia.
To mark the Estonian Victory Day the USS Mahan will be open to the public at the Port of Tallinn Wharf 17 from 1 to 3 p.m. on June 23.
