Estonian diplomats laid a wreath and lighted candles. Ambassadors of Lithuania and Latvia, as well as other diplomats and representatives of local Baltic communities also took part of the event. The traditional event was organized by Joint Baltic American National Committee.
Ambassador Kaljurand assured that the tragic stories of the victims will not be forgotten. “Candles symbolize memory, but also light and hope” said Kaljurand. “Our thoughts are today with all those who arestill under communist and authoritarian regimes and especially with Ukrainianswho today are fighting and falling for their right to determine the future oftheir country,” she added.
Mass deportations were simultaneously carried out in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania by the Soviet authorities from 25 to 29 March 1949. Over 20 000 people were forcefully taken from Estonia to Siberia.
