Wounded Estonian soldier recovering in Great Britain

TALLINN, Jul 06, BNS – The Estonian soldier who sustained grave injuries in Afghanistan on Thursday has been taken to the Headly Court military hospital in Great Britain.

“The soldier’s situation is still grave but stable,” said Major Peeter Tali, head of the information department at the Estonian Defense Forces Heaquarters.

He added that also the two soldiers wounded on June 11 in Afghanistan were recovering in Great Britain.

Anti-government units Thursday attacked a foot patrol of the Estonian ESTCOY infantry company in Helmand Province in southern Afghanistan. One soldier sustained grave injuries in the attack and was taken to the Camp Bastion military base.

The defense forces will not disclose the name of the wounded soldier or the nature of his injuries, because the personal information protection act does not allow publication of delicate personal information.

Since Estonian units were first despatched to Afghanistan in 2003, three Estonian soldiers have been killed and 28 wounded in that country.
