UNGA79 High-Level Meeting on antimicrobial resistance„ Investing in the present and securing our future together: accelerating multisectoral global, regional and national actions to address antimicrobial resistance”
Statement delivered by H.E. Margus Tsahkna, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Estonia
26 September 2024, New York
Excellencies, ladies, and gentlemen
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the most pressing global health threats of our time, with the potential to cause significant harm in the future if not addressed with urgency. Therefore, I underscore the critical need for global cooperation in the fight against AMR.
While Estonia’s antibiotic use is lower than in many European countries, we do face substantial challenges. For example, a shortage of specialists, the unwarranted use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, and the high use of critical antibiotics in animal treatment.
To effectively combat these challenges, we must first invest in the training and development of specialists across all sectors – human, animal, and environmental health. This can ensure that we are well equipped to handle the complexities of AMR.
Additionally, by leveraging global expertise and fostering international partnerships, we can enhance our own efforts and benefit from the knowledge and resources of others who share the challenges.
The high use of broad-spectrum antibiotics might be a consequence of limited access to more targeted and effective alternatives. Therefore, we must accelerate the approval of new, safe antimicrobials and adopt sustainable procurement models. These steps are crucial in reducing our reliance on broad-spectrum antibiotics, which often contribute to the development of resistance.
Finally, it is important for all countries, including Estonia, that accurate data on antibiotic use and resistance patterns is more widely shared. Global collaboration on data collection and analysis will enable us to coordinate the efforts more effectively and ensure that we are making informed decisions in the joint fight against AMR.
To conclude, let us unite in our efforts to strengthen our fight against AMR through strategic investments, enhanced training, and global collaboration. By doing so, we will protect our communities and secure a healthier future for generations to come.
Thank you.
