Security Council Press Elements on Mali

The members of the Security Council expressed their deep concern at the latest political tensions in Mali.

The members of the Security Council expressed their strong support for ECOWAS’ mediation efforts, including the missions led by former and current Heads of State of the region and spearheaded by H.E. Issoufou Mahamadou, Chairman of ECOWAS Authority, and took note of the recommendations that were endorsed today during the extraordinary summit of ECOWAS’ Heads of State.

The members of the Security Council urged the Malian parties to act on these recommendations without delay in order to resolve the tensions, to prioritize dialogue, and to refrain from any action likely to fuel further tensions and threaten the rule of law.

The members of the Security Council recalled the importance of the implementation of the peace agreement and of the stabilization of the Centre of the country as set out in resolution 2531 (2020) and reiterated their support to the Special Representative and to MINUSMA in their efforts to bring lasting peace and stability to Mali and their attachment to the safety and security of peacekeepers.
